Ptakha

'

Ptakha is Two dots - one dot placed above the consonant and one dot placed below.
Pronounced as the letter a in at or hat and generally has the sound of short and close a.

In the great majority of cases, when a consonant follows it, which has a vowel of its own, that consonant is doubled in pronunciation,

e. g. ܐܲܢܹܐ these; ܠܲܦܵܐ  wave; where ܢـ, and ܦ are each doubled, pronounced as ܐܲܢـ ܢܹܐ An-ne and  ܠܲܦ ܦܵܐ lap-pa.

The letters ܚ  and ܪ, double constantly,

e. g. ܒܲܚܸܠ to envy; ܡܲܚܹܐ to make alive; pronounced respectively bakh-khil ܒܲܚ ܚܸܠ, makh-khee ܡܲܚ ܚܹܐ. So tooܟܲܪܵܐ  deaf; pronounced ܟܲܪ ܪܵܐ kar-ra.

A few words, such as ܐܲܬܘܼܢܵܐ a furnace, ܚܲܕܘܼܬܵܐ happiness, ܡܲܠܲܐܟܼܵܐ angel, ܫܲܪܝܼܪܵܐ honest, derived from the classical language, are exceptions to the above rule. The sound of Ptakha in these words is like that of Zqapa and the following consonant is not doubled. So is ܒܲܗܪܵܐ light; and ܕܪܲܥܢܵܐ arm.
